Stressing the Dressing: Reducing Vascular Access Device Complications

Now Available On-Demand!

Catheter Related Bloodstream Infections (CRBSI) are associated with negative clinical outcomes (morbidity and mortality), increased length of hospital stay, and increased costs. Clinical Practice Guidelines indicate that dressing changes due to the disruption are associated with a risk of bloodstream infection. This presentation will address the patient, quality, legal and financial implications of vascular access device dressing disruption.

  • Describe the components of clinical practice guidelines and how they differ from evidence-based medicine
  • Based upon the evidence, identify issues relating to the failure to keep dressings intact/adherent and the potential impact on CRBSIs and MARSI
  • Discuss why inclusion of products that enhance dressing adherence should be included as an intervention in every CLABSI bundle
  • Evaluate and utilize products/technologies that can prevent dressing disruption as they are a critical component of meeting the evidence-based standard of care in the prevention of hospital-acquired infections.

Healthcare professionals involved in insertion, use, maintenance and monitoring of vascular catheters and those that face the challenge of preventing bloodstream infections.
