Pain management and palliative care are oftendifficult to access for people with both intellectual and developmental disabilitiesand dementia. The presentation utilizes recent work of the International Summiton Intellectual Disability and Dementia which defined advanced dementia,proposed how palliative care services (including hospice) may be utilized andmade recommendations for how advanced directives and advance care planningprior to the extensive progression of dementia may be facilitated. Caseexamples will be offered that help illustrate the value of service integrationefforts between intellectual disability and palliative care providers,specialized training for caregivers on end of life care and supports, andinvolvement of adults with intellectual disability early on in their advancecare planning.
