Creating and Using Writing Activities with Boardmaker Online

Description: Create, use, and take data on the progress of students while they learn the art of writing for communication and expression with Boardmaker Online. How? This session will introduce users of Boardmaker Online to the different types of on-screen Writing Templates in the program.  Demonstration of placing content in the writing templates and accessibility options for students using them in the web players will also be covered.  Session qualifies for .1 ASHA CEU credits.



  1. Introductions (5 minutes)
  2. Identify writing templates found in the Online Editor of  Boardmaker Online (10 minutes)
  3. Discuss planning strategies for creating meaningful writing activities with Boardmaker Online (10 minutes)
  4. Demonstrate placing images in different types of writing templates (15 minutes)
  5. Use Writing Activities with the Student Center Web Players of Boardmaker Online (10 minutes)
  6. Look at writing data recorded in the student’s account of Boardmaker Online (5 minutes)
  7. Review of information (5 minutes)


Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to discriminate between the different types of writing templates included in Boardmaker Online.
  2. Participants will be able to identify the level of writer each template can be used to support.
  3. Through the use of a planning guide and an understanding of how to populate templates with meaningful content, participants will be able to create, use and take data with appropriate writing activities for their students.


Instructor Bio:

 Enid Hurtado received her Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and her teaching credential in Special Education: Moderate to Severe from San Diego State University.  She worked as a Special Education Teacher for 6 years in California and Colorado with children of varying disabilities, Pre-12. After leaving the public school system, she worked as a behavior specialist for an Early Intervention Program. She currently educates and trains parents and professionals on the use of Boardmaker products for instruction.
